Your Minority Speaker at The Singapore Business Show 2023

Last month, I had the honour of speaking at the Singapore Business Show 2023, an event that drew professionals from diverse sectors, all seeking to gain deeper insights into the ever-evolving landscape of business and innovation. As a media professional representing RICE Media, an outlet committed to impactful storytelling, this opportunity was both a privilege and a responsibility.

My journey in the media industry spans more than a decade, encompassing roles in sports entertainment and creative communications for government campaigns. Today, at RICE Media, our mission is to provide a unique blend of insightful and thought-provoking content to our audiences in Singapore and the region as we continue to serve advertising partners supplement their digital and performance marketing efforts with content creation and amplification.

The Singapore Business Show 2023 allowed me to share not only my journey but also to bring the collective wisdom of RICE Media to a discerning audience. My objective was simple—to dispel misconceptions about the publication, emphasising our role as bridge builders in connecting diverse communities while upholding the integrity of our journalism—a mission we pursue, one story at a time.

Public speaking has not always been my forte, a challenge I share with many minorities in our industry. Yet, I firmly believe that growth occurs beyond our comfort zone. With this conviction, I embraced the challenge, focussing on how I can create value for offline audience. The intent wasn't about showcasing expertise and capabilities as how others might done it. I wanted to share a glimpse into the uncertainties and growth that have shaped RICE Media's path—which I thought it could be of value to local entrepreneurs attending this exhibition.

The Singapore Business Show 2023 became a space for me to network; an opportunity to glean insights from fellow professionals and entrepreneurs. The connections forged and the knowledge shared reminded me that, in this dynamic industry, our collective experiences and perspectives are invaluable assets.

In my sharing, I spoke about the importance of diversity within the media landscape. Our industry thrives when we embrace a multitude of voices, each contributing unique insights and fresh perspectives. There is space for healthy discourse. There is space for diversity. There is space for everyone. I truly appreciate the few folks who reached out to me after the session to speak more about the points I've raised during the presentation.

My takeaway—local media professionals need to step forward and share their wealth of experiences and insights as we bear the responsibility of guiding the next generation and mentoring them as they navigate the complex world of media (especially with the rapid development of AI). Competition aside, we must ensure that the local media continues to evolve and adapt, remaining vibrant and innovative, and most importantly, relevant.

I hope to continue the advocacy of communities embracing diversity, fostering meaningful connections, and exploring the ever-evolving media landscape together —one impactful story at a time.
